Below, I suggested that a M1 Garand from the CMP is a excellent substitute for the currently popular military style autoloading defensive rifles such as the AR and AK, if you don’t mind a ten pound rifle.
But how would an M1 shooter go about toting ammunition in a MOLLE world?
The answer: The SOE Pull-Out Garand Tray! This neat idea puts 6 full enbloc clips in any magazine pouch that will accommodate 3 AR magazines. Stuff 3 of those in a mag bag like this, and you’ve got 144 rounds of 30 cal hurt in a convenient grab ‘n go package.

Thats a pretty nifty little unit. I have to admit, the thought of running around in my ACUs while hauling a Garand causes a little cognitive dissonance, like hand-cranking Jeep to start the engine…

I don’t have any newfangled MOLLE stuff so I’m coming at it from the other direction, and because my CA AR-magazines are weenie little 10-rounders I wonder if they fit in one of my Garand belt pouches. And not having any ACU’s to run-around in I’m looking to find a good M43 type old-school field jacket. :-)

My zombocalypse is a .45/70 with a mills belt. how cool is that? For close assault I use 150 grain “collar buttons”. The rest of the zombies get 400 grain thumpers. Of course the scout rifle is a nice alternative for the rotten days when I have to scoot and shoot.

I love the Mills Belt! My Krag needs one - it does have the McKeever pouch, but still needs a 100-round belt.

I dig the hell out of those trays. Wish I hadn’t sold my SOE Lightfighter rig or I’d repurpose it to Garand detail.
If I had a Garand, that is…:(
For a cheap to buy, cheap to feed panic-buy rifle, it’s hard to beat an SKS, too.
