A two thousand page health care ‘reform’ bill filled with lawyerese and wonkishness may seem like a long march from having a secret police, internal travel visas and the murder of dissidents, but it’s a matter of degree, not kind. Government exists only to give power and money to politicians, government employees, and patrons of the government. Whether it gets to do that with the IRS or the Stasi is merely details. Every time an advocate of the left suggests a new agency or a new power, this is what they are unknowingly asking for.
Perhaps in our lifetimes, the onrushing financial collapse will allow us to unwind the ratchet, but when one of the greatest presidents of the 20th century and the 1994 R Congress could not, it’s hard to be hopeful.
I used to be more optimistic about America, but that was when America still resembled America and not some tinpot European corporatist / socialist state.
