COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – A woman being driven around in a rented limousine pulled up at a coat store and announced she’d won the lottery and would pay for everyone’s purchases, police said, but she ended up causing a riot when customers realized it was a hoax.
Angry customers threw merchandise around and looted, leaving the store looking as though a hurricane had passed through it, police said.
I know the hoaxer will be vilified in the press and prosecuted, but I think this was a wonderful piece of subversive performance art.
A flashy person promises unearned freebies to people she’s never met, without any means of paying for them herself, and is immediately idolized by the people she’s showering with gifts. When it becomes apparent that the freeloaders won’t get their loot, they immediately take out their frustrations by trashing the property of the local producers, instead of the person who erroneously promised them riches!
Remind you of anything?

It’s funny ’cause it’s true! :D
Except for the “funny” part. :(
Yeah. This definitely goes in the “gotta laugh to stop from cryin’” file.
Ouch, baby. Very ouch.
I have always been someone who appreciates the artistry in a really good con – and whoever this lady is, she gets double points for not only conning a bunch of people, but for the layers of meaning on this.
Awesome, and yet terrible.
That’s RACIST!
I blame Bush.
